Macon-John Michael Carroll of Waynesboro received two of Mercer University's top honors at commencement in the Macon Coliseum on Saturday, May 14. Mercer University President R. Kirby Godsey presented him with the Griffin B. Bell Award for Community Service-the only award selected from students from all of the University's 10 colleges and schools-and the Louie D. Newton General Excellence Medal-one of two top awards given to Mercer undergraduate students.   He is the son of Nancy and Michael Carroll.   While it is rare for a graduate to receive two of the University's highest honors, Carroll's commitment and service to others and his outstanding academic accomplishments made him deserving of both. Macon-Joshua M. Rogers of Waycross received one of Mercer University's two top honors for undergraduates at commencement in the Macon Coliseum on Saturday, May 14. Mercer University President R. Kirby Godsey presented him with the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award.   Rogers, who graduated summa cum laude May 14 with a bachelor of arts in history, is the son of Mark and Elizabeth Rogers of Waycross.   He has shown unwavering commitment to the University, the Macon community and scholarship throughout his four years at Mercer. The history major has served as a member of the Student Government Association since his freshman year, having recently completed his tenure as the 2004-2005 president. Macon--Mercer University's Society for Technical Communication (STC) Chapter in the School of Engineering recently received two honors at the STC international conference in Seattle, Wash. Mercer's STC chapter received the Student Chapter of Distinction Award, the highest honor given to a student chapter in this professional society. The award is only given to one student chapter in each of the STC's two chapter size categories. The student group also received the Best of Show Award for its newsletter, "Connections," in the STC Newsletter Competition.   Thirty-eight organizations submitted entries for the international newsletter competition, including 31 professional chapters, four student chapters and three special interest groups. Professor Adam Milani, who had taught at the Mercer University Law School since 1997, died unexpectedly Wednesday, May 11, following complications from surgery. Professor Milani was one of the leading experts in the country on disability law and legal writing.
ATLANTA - Four students at Southern School of Pharmacy of Mercer University graduated May 7 with perfect 4.0 grade point averages, not an easy feat in such an academically rigorous environment. In recognition of their achievement, the School awarded each of them with the prestigious R.C. Hood Award, the highest scholastic award offered by the Southern School of Pharmacy.
MACON, Ga. - The Mercer Athletic Department's annual "Big Auction" is set for Thursday, May 19 at the University Center.   The "Big Auction" is a fund-raiser for Mercer athletics and has hundreds of items available, varying from several automobiles to a weekend of Atlanta Braves baseball to sports memorabilia. There is also a silent auction, which features some of the best deals in middle Georgia.   "Every year, this event gets better and better," said Mercer Director of Athletics Bobby Pope. "This year we have some great items available, especially in the sports memorabilia."   The "Big Auction" is set to begin at 12 p.m. on Thursday, May 19, with the silent auction.  The silent auction closes out at 7 p.m. and the live auction starts at 7:30 p.m. in the University Center Arena.    To check out items available at the auction, click here.
MACON - State Representatives Jim Cole (R-Forsyth) and Allen Freeman (R-Macon) announced today that the Speaker of the Georgia House of Representatives, Glenn Richardson (R-Hiram), and other legislative leaders will join them for a tour of the Mercer University School of Medicine on Wednesday, May 11. The tour will start at 3 p.m. at the Medical School Auditorium.
ATLANTA - Mercer University Southern School of Pharmacy is one of the best pharmacy programs in the nation, according to the annual "Best Graduate Schools" rankings recently released by U.S.News & World Report. The Southern School of Pharmacy is one of only three private pharmacy schools ranked in the top 30.
