(MACON)  - The Mercer Wind Ensemble will present a "Concert of Concertos," which will include two Georgia premieres, Friday, April 16, 7:30 p.m.,  at The Grand Opera House, 651 Mulberry St.   The concert will be conducted by Dr. Douglas Hill, associate professor of music, director of instrumental music and coordinator of the music education program for Mercer University's College of Liberal Arts. The concert is free and open to the public.   The two works premiering are Eric Ewazen's (pictured immediate left) "Danzante" (inspired by the Diego Rivera painting) for trumpet and wind ensemble and Gary Ziek's "Concerto for Percussion and Wind Ensemble." The entire Mercer family is saddened by the tragic events that occurred on the Virginia Tech campus earlier this week. In the aftermath of that tragedy, there are many questions about how this could happen on any college campus in America, and what could be done to prevent it from happening again.
MACON- Mercer University's Political Science Department will host a free public debate on foreign policy Tuesday, Oct. 7, at 6 p.m. in the McCorkle Music Building, Neva Langley Fickling Hall.   This is part of a nationwide event called  "The People Speak: America Debates Its Role in the World," in which thousands of debates will take place in hundreds of locations across the country between Oct. 5th and 18th. MACON - Mercer University President William D. Underwood today announced the appointment of legal scholar Gary J. Simson, the Joseph C. Hostetler-Baker and Hostetler Professor of Law at Case Western Reserve University, as dean of the Walter F. George School of Law. The appointment is effective July 1.
ATLANTA/MACON/McDONOUGH/LITHIA SPRINGS - Students from Mercer University's College of Continuing and Professional Studies have published a literary journal, titled Regeneration!: A Journal of Creative Writing, that may be the first of its kind in the country. The journal is written and edited by non-traditional undergraduate students, and is a first, the group says.
Atlanta - The Georgia Baptist Convention has paid tribute to Alma native Dr. Susan Sweat Gunby, dean of Georgia Baptist College of Nursing of Mercer University, for her contributions to enhance nursing education and the nursing profession.
ATLANTA - Mercer University awarded the honorary doctor of science degree to Dennis K. Helling, executive director of Kaiser Permanente's pharmacy operations and therapeutics, at the Southern School of Pharmacy commencement on May 7. Mercer University President R. Kirby Godsey made the presentation after Helling gave the commencement address.

WHO: Mercer Law School   WHAT: Law School student Mike Voynich will exchange roles with Interim Dean Mike Sabbath for the day.   WHEN: Monday, April 21   WHERE: Mercer Law School, atop Coleman Hill   WHY: At the Association of Women Law Students' (A.W.L.S.) charity auction, student MIke Voynich paid $80 to exchange places with Dean Sabbath for a day. On April 21, the switch will take place with Voynich leading staff meetings and conducting the business of the Law School while Dean Sabbath will be attending Voynich's classes.
