MACON-In an effort to better structure student programs that promote school spirit and interest in student activities, a spirit team coordinator has been hired. The purpose of the new role will be to organize the efforts of the Mercer cheerleaders, mascot, pep band and, in the near future, a pom-pom squad.
MACON - The Civic Engagement Colloquium of Mercer University kicks off the first of three presentations on Oct. 19 at 7 p.m. in the Medical School Auditorium. The panel discussion, which is free and open to the public, will focus on Mercer Engaging Community and Health.

MACON - Leading edge information on breast cancer detection and treatment will be presented at an Oct. 21 "Pink Ribbon Rally" hosted by Mercer University. The rally, organized by students in the Master of Public Health program, will feature an educational program, a fashion show, free massages, door prizes and yoga classes. The event will last from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Newton Chapel, on the corner of Coleman Avenue and Adams Street, and is free and open to the public.
ATLANTA -- Students interested in continuing their nursing education beyond a baccalaureate degree should attend the Graduate Tea at Mercer University's Georgia Baptist College of Nursing. The program, to be held Wednesday, Oct. 13, from 10 a.m. until noon on Mercer's Atlanta campus, will address questions about the master's of science program in nursing.   Dr. Linda A. Streit, associate dean for the graduate program, will present the general curriculum plan for both areas of concentration (nursing education and acute/critical care of the adult). ATLANTA - As part of its annual alumni day, the Georgia Baptist College of Nursing of Mercer University will specially honor its alumnae who were members of the Cadet Nurse Corps - a federal education program that graduated more than 124,000 nurses across the nation during World War II. Expect approximately 10 cadet nurses to be present during the ceremony on Oct. 8.   "This year, Americans have marked the 60th anniversary of D-Day and the dedication of the World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C.," notes Susan Gunby, dean of the Georgia Baptist College of Nursing. "We felt that this was an appropriate time to honor our alumnae who were members of the Cadet Nurse Corps and aided in the war effort."   Between 1943 and 1948, Georgia Baptist School of Nursing graduated 270 young women into the Cadet Nurse Corps.         This October, The Grand Opera House is presenting Porgy and Bess on Oct. 2-3 at 7:30 p.m. The show is a part of The Grand's annual six-part series of nationally touring Broadway musicals.
