The Mercer Baptist Collegiate Ministries of Mercer University won the "CourtsRedford Award for Excellence in Student Missionary Deployment" for the 2006year. This award is presented annually to the leading colleges anduniversities who effectively mobilized their students to impact lostness inNorth America. Accepting the award for the Mercer BCM was the BCM Missionscoordinator for the 2005-06 school year, Sarah Holik, and the BCM Missionscoordinator for the 2006-07 school year, Aaron Kinard. Presenting the awardon behalf of the North American Mission Board was Amy Signaigo.
MACON , GA - Walter F. George School of Law of Mercer University presented Laura Watts Harper of Huntsville, Ala., the 2007 George Waldo Woodruff Award of Excellence during spring commencement in Macon. The most prestigious honor the law school bestows on a student, the Woodruff Award is presented to the law graduate with the highest cumulative academic average for the three years of law study.
U. S. District Court Judge Beverly B. Martin was the commencement speaker at the Walter F. George School of Law commencement on May 6, which was held at the Macon City Auditorium. Below is her commencement address:   President Godsey, Dr. Fleming, Dean Floyd, distinguished members of the faculty, and members of the graduating class of 2005:   It is a real privilege for me to be here in my hometown with you on this marvelous day.  I love Macon, and I have a tremendous affection for Mercer Law School.  My great grandfather, my grandfather, and my father each graduated from the Mercer School of Law, and if I have accomplished anything in this profession, I know that it is due, in large part, to the heritage given to me by these three Mercer lawyers.   I am here to honor the graduates, but this is a big day for the families of the graduates as well.  There are many mothers, fathers, husbands and wives who have sacrificed so much to make this day...
Twenty-one exceptionally talented high school strings musicians, from eleven states and Canada, have been selected to participate in the second annual Robert McDuffie & Friends Labor Day Festival for Strings, held at the Mercer University Townsend School of Music in Macon, Aug. 31-Sept. 4. The intense five-day festival and musical learning extravaganza will provide the students an opportunity to study at Mercer with world-renowned violinist and Distinguished University Professor of Music Robert McDuffie and some of the nation's foremost concert artists. The Festival is a preview of the academic offerings of the Robert McDuffie Center for Strings at Mercer University, which opens in Fall 2007. In addition to Robert McDuffie, the following Distinguished Artists of the McDuffie Center will participate as faculty for the Festival: Andr'es Diaz, renowned concert cellist; David Halen, Concertmaster, Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra; Christopher Rex, Principal Cellist, Atlanta Symphony...
MACON - Stacey I. Harwell of Valdosta, Ga., took home two top honors when she graduated from Mercer University this month. She is the 2007 recipient of the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award and the Wallace Odell DuVall Excellence in Leadership Award.
David Gushee, Distinguished University Professor of Christian Ethics at the McAfee School of Theology, will appear this Sunday morning at 11 a.m. on Wolf Blitzer's Late Edition talk show on CNN. Gushee will discuss the Compassion Forum event that will occur later on Sunday at Messiah College. Gushee serves on the Compassion Forum board that organized the event, which is a presidential candidate discussion on faith, values and policy and will involve the three major presidential candidates.The forum itself will be televised live on CNN at 8 p.m. This is Gushee's second national TV appearance in two weeks. MACON - Promising a "sober speech," President Jimmy Carter called on the next administration of the United States to restore human rights as a national priority. Carter made his remarks during the second annual Mercer University President's Lecture Series today on the Macon campus.
MACON - Noted scholar and Mercer alumnus Dr. Y. Lynn Holmes will talk about his career and extensive collection of ancient artifacts from the Holy Land at Jack Tarver Library at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday on the lower level of the library. The talk marks the opening of a new exhibit, "Holmes Holy Land Ancient Artifact Collection," which features items from Dr. Holmes' collection of ancient artifacts on loan to the University.
OGAN, Utah - A landmark season for the Mercer men's basketball team resulted in the CollegeInsider.com Tournament Championship, earned in a hard-fought 70-67 win at Utah State on Wednesday night. Mercer's victory secured the team's spot in history as the Atlantic Sun Conference's first team to capture a postseason crown. Junior Travis Smith booked a career-high 17 points in the win, while sophomore Langston Hall added 16. Sophomore Bud Thomas notched his second straight game in double figures with 10 points.
SAVANNAH/MACON/ATLANTA - More than 1,750 graduates will participate in Mercer University commencements during May in Macon, Atlanta and Savannah, including the first School of Medicine commencement for the Savannah campus. This also marks the second year for the University's campus-wide outdoor commencement in Atlanta, which has become the University's largest. The University will confer bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees during five commencements.
