MACON- Recent studies show as much as 10 percent of college students decide to transfer to another institution during or after their freshman year.
Some students discover the college or university they selected as a high school student is not the perfect fit for them. The institution may be too large or too small or it may not provide the collegiate experience that the student had hoped to have. Other students may elect to start their studies at one institution and transfer into a degree program that is better tailored to their future career path.
Mercer will hold Transfer Information Sessions on Sunday, Nov. 30, and Sunday, Dec. 28, for undergraduate students interested in transferring to Mercer in spring or fall 2004. These sessions will be held from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the Mercer School of Medicine on the University's Macon campus.

MACON- Mercer University's computer programming team, the Binary Bears, recently had four student teams place in the top five among Division II teams at the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) Regional Programming Contest Championship.
The contest was held at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, Fla. Students were asked to use their mathematics, data processing and computer knowledge to solve as many problems as they could in five hours using a single computer.
Mercer students Samson Alva of Dubai, U.A.E. , Cody Boisclair of Warner Robins and Charles Thorogood of Smyrna, solved an impressive eight problems, beating out Division I teams that included graduate students from Mississippi State University, Clemson University and Auburn University. The student team placed ninth overall out of 88 teams. The team also placed first in the Division II category.

Macon- Mercer University's student chapter of the American Chemical Society (ACS) recently was one of only 29 chapters in the nation to receive an Outstanding award. The award was based on its chapter activities during the 2002-2003 academic year.
The 2002-2003 Mercer ACS student chapter president was Kelly Wade of Colquitt, and the vice president was Sean Lynch of Fayetteville. Both Wade and Lynch are now seniors at Mercer. Natasha Lee, a Jonesboro resident who graduated in May and is a first-year student at the Dental School of Medical College of Georgia, served as treasurer. Kinjal Vakil, a Martinez resident who also graduated in May and is a first-year student in Mercer's Southern School of Pharmacy, served as secretary. The 2003-2004 University Commons Colloquium Series will have its fourth of six lectures on Thursday, Jan.15 at 7:30 p.m. in room 251 Stetson Hall on the Macon campus. Professor Jack L. Sammons of Mercer's Walter F. George School of Law will speak on "A Christian Pedagogy: The Method is the Message." He will speak for 30 minutes. Afterwards, Mercer professors Tom Scott of the History Department and Doug Thompson, University Commons, will have five minutes each to respond. Refreshments will be served.
The final two speakers will be Professor Andrew Silver of the English Department and Mercer President R. Kirby Godsey. Silver will speak on "Pluralism in a Baptist University" on Feb. 17 at 7:30 p.m., room 251 Stetson Hall on the Macon campus. Macon--The Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) and the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching announced today Dr. Andrew Silver, assistant professor of English at Mercer's College of Liberal Arts, has been named the 2003 Georgia Professor of the Year. The announcement was made at a ceremony in Washington D.C.
"Dr. Silver represents the finest Mercer has to offer. He demonstrates the University's commitment to being a teaching institution of the highest caliber," said Mercer University President R. Kirby Godsey. "All of us within the University applaud his accomplishments and his dedication to his students."
Silver has taught at Mercer since 1998. He earned his undergraduate degree in religion at George Washington University and his doctorate in English literature at Emory University. Prior to coming to Mercer, he served as a visiting assistant professor at Emory University and a dean's teaching fellow at Oxford College of Emory University.

Atlanta- After a strong turnout at the first set of workshops, Mercer University will offer a second round of two preparation workshops for the Praxis I exam on Nov. 15 at the Cecil B. Day Campus in Atlanta.
One workshop will focus on the Praxis I math section, and the other will focus on the verbal section of the exam. Both workshops will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Space is limited.
