ATLANTA - When the 145 members of Mercer University's College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences Class of 2010 receive their white coats at the College's annual White Coat Ceremony on Aug. 17, they will see newly-designed logo patches to reflect the College's new name. Approximately 570 pharmacy students will be wearing the logos on their coats in more than 175 locations in the metro Atlanta area as they participate in their practice experiences.
MACON, Ga.- The Mercer men's basketball team opens a two-game Atlantic Sun Conference homestand playing host to league-newcomer Kennesaw State Thursday night in the University. Tip off is at 7 p.m.
The contest is the first meeting on the hardwood between the two schools, with Kennesaw State (9-8, 7-1 A-Sun) sitting atop the conference standings along with Florida Atlantic. Mercer, riding a five-game home winning streak dating back to last season, is looking to snap a three-game losing streak.
"It'll be an interesting matchup," said Mercer head coach Mark Slonaker. "Coach Ingle and I have been friends for 25 years, and it's the first time we've ever competed against each other."

MACON - Mercer University will host its Fourth Biennial Undergraduate Research in Mathematics Conference on the University's Macon campus on Saturday in the University's Science and Engineering Building. The regional conference will feature research by undergraduate students from several southeastern states, as well as Mercer. The event takes place from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and will include student presentations, a plenary speaker and a math competition.
Atlanta--Vijaya Subrahmanyam, associate professor of finance at the Eugene W. Stetson School of Business and Economics of Mercer University, was recently nominated a director for the League of Women Voters of Atlanta/Fulton County.
The League of Women Voters, a nonpartisan political organization, encourages the informed and active participation of citizens in government, works to increase understanding of major public policy issues, and influences public policy through education and advocacy.Subrahmanyam said as a trained economist and educator with a strong interest and consulting background in public policy, she will strive to help educate the public about the democratic process.
"If I can in any way mobilize people, particularly women and minorities, to vote and make them realize that their vote matters, I think I may have made a difference," she said.

SAVANNAH, Ga.- The Mercer men's basketball team placed three players in double figures en route to downing Savannah State, 77-60, in non-conference action Monday night.
After a game delay of approximately 10 minutes because of a power outage, then a further problem with the shot clock, the Bears took an early 3-2 lead on guard Ross Alacqua's 3-pointer from the left wing. A basket and free throw by Tigers' leading scorer Javon Randolph gave Savannah State a brief 5-3 lead. However, Mercer (7-16) ran off 10 straight points to gain a 15-5 lead, forcing SSU coach Horace Brodnax to call a 30-second timeout at the 15:43 mark. CHARLOTTE, NC - The Washington-based Baptist Joint Committee for Religious Liberty presented its J.M. Dawson Religious Liberty Award to Mercer University President William D. Underwood during the organization's annual Religious Liberty Council Luncheon in Charlotte, N.C., on June 25 during the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship General Assembly. Also receiving the Dawson Award at the luncheon was the Rev. Dr. Gardner Taylor, one of the founders of the Progressive National Baptist Convention and a religious leader during the Civil Rights Movement.

Macon, Ga. - The Board of Trustees of Mercer University, in its annual spring meeting, approved several historic motions today. The two-and-a-half-hour session was the last regular Trustees meeting of Mercer President R. Kirby Godsey's 27-year administration. Trustees took action to amend the University's charter, establish a school of music, and name the historic Administration Building.
In a final step in the discontinuance of the University's relationship with the Georgia Baptist Convention, the Trustees amended Mercer's charter to give the Board of Trustees "the exclusive authority to determine the eligibility and qualifications of any person for service on the Board of Trustees, and said determination shall be final and conclusive." This action removed all authority the Georgia Baptist Convention had in the approval process of electing Trustees.

MACON, Ga. - Mercer University President William D. Underwood today announced the appointment of Brian Dalton as senior vice president for enrollment management, effective July 1. Dalton, currently vice president for enrollment management and associate academic dean for program development at the College of St. Scholastica in Duluth, Minn., succeeds Terry Whittum, who recently resigned to return to Florida for personal reasons.
