Mercer's Black Law Student Association (BLSA) chapter was honored as the 2017 Regional Medium-Sized Chapter of the Year on Feb. 4 at the Southern Region Black Law Student Association Convention in Atlanta. Mercer BLSA was recognized for its outstanding community service initiatives, academic achievement and professional and social events held during 2016.
This year's Mercer BLSA initiatives included organizing voting initiative projects; hosting a meet-and-greet with U.S. Rep. John Lewis among other legal professional events; coordinating Black History Month events; and donating gifts to residents of a children's home during the holiday season. Mercer BLSA also focused on developing programming that builds relationships among students and alumni.
Mercer BLSA was honored as Regional Small Chapter of the Year in 2016.
“Winning two years in a row is welcome recognition of the effort Mercer BLSA puts forth in order not only to strengthen the bond among its members and to inspire new social justice advocates but also to impact the Macon-Bibb community-at-large positively and substantively,” said BLSA President Whitney Edwards.
Mercer BLSA received this recognition among other BLSAs from law schools across the southern region, which includes Alabama, Georgia, Florida, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee.
