Mercer University School of Medicine has announced Alice Aumann House, M.D., FAAFP as the newest recipient of the Joy McCann Professorship for Women in Medicine. A longtime leader, mentor and advocate for students, Dr. House has been a cornerstone of the School of Medicine community. This recognition honors her ongoing impact on the school, its mission and the students she serves.

“There’s truly nothing Dr. House can’t do,” said Dean Jean R. Sumner, M.D., FACP. “She’s the heart of this institution. Her selfless dedication to our students and to our mission is unmatched. I can’t think of anyone more deserving.”

Established in 2004 through a generous endowment from the Joy McCann Foundation, the professorship is awarded every three years to a female physician faculty member who demonstrates excellence in medical education, mentorship, research, patient care and community service. Recipients receive an annual monetary award to support both their own academic initiatives and the needs of students.

Dr. House joins a distinguished group of past recipients, including Dr. Anna Walker, Dr. Natalie Hogan and Dr. Keisha Callens. Each has contributed meaningfully to Mercer University School of Medicine’s mission of preparing physicians to serve rural, medically underserved areas in Georgia.

For Dr. House, this award formalizes what she has quietly done for years — personally investing in the success of students.

“This is truly exciting,” said Dr. House. “It is an opportunity to help students pursue opportunities they might not otherwise be able to afford. We bring in talented students from rural, underserved areas who have the passion and ability to succeed but not always the financial means. This support can help close that gap.”

In addition to honoring exceptional faculty, the Joy McCann Professorship strengthens Mercer University School of Medicine’s broader commitment to faculty development and student support. With Dr. House as the newest honoree, that tradition continues in the very best of hands.
