James Stephens is graduating from Mercer University’s School of Business with a Bachelor of Business Administration in human resource management.
What are your plans after graduation?
After graduation, I will continue my role as a plant manager at one of the leading injection molding companies in the industry. I am committed to nurturing a culture of accountability and excellence through collaboration with our management team. My greatest passion is supporting young managers in their development, empowering new employees, and ensuring an environment where our team can thrive and move forward together.
What is one of your favorite Mercer memories?
My favorite memory of Mercer was the day in 2021 when I picked up the phone and asked, “How do I start again?” I wasn’t sure what to expect, but the guidance department answered with patience, encouragement and a clear path forward. They walked me through each step and made the impossible feel possible.
How do you plan on changing the world?
I plan on changing the world by continuing to pour into the next generation through a nonprofit organization I co-founded with a close friend, called Molding Kids for Success. Our mission is to empower youth by introducing them to the world of STEM, with a special focus on injection molding and manufacturing. Through hands-on training, mentorship and exposure to real-world applications, one mold at a time, we are shaping the innovators and creators of tomorrow.
What advice do you have for incoming students?
Trust the process, choose your passion, make mistakes, learn and keep moving forward. Be vulnerable, so your professors can see your weaknesses because that is where the real growth begins. Own your journey, embrace accountability, grow with purpose, let your story inspire others. Become the Bear.
How did Mercer prepare you for your future?
Mercer University provided me with the skills I needed most. It taught me the importance of clear communication, confident decision-making and maintaining composure under pressure. Beyond skill development, it sharpened my mindset, equipping me to face challenges with purpose and poise. This strong foundation has played a crucial role in my growth into becoming the Bear I am today.
What makes Mercer special to you?
In 1990, one decision changed everything and led me to the Bureau of Prisons. I thought my future was lost until I found hope at Mercer University. Mercer wasn’t just a school; it reignited my purpose. I carried those lessons, building a career from the ground up. I worked my way through a Fortune 500 company, and today, I serve as plant manager. In 2021, I returned to finish what I started so many years ago with the support of Mercer University. I stayed focused and fulfilled the promise I made to myself in 1992. Today, I graduate with a degree and a story of growth, faith and redemption. Thank you, Mercer University, for believing in me and challenging me to become the leader I am today.
