Tanvi Sarma recently graduated from Mercer University’s College of Liberal Arts and Sciences with a Bachelor of Science in neuroscience.
What are your plans after graduation?
Attending Mercer University School of Medicine on the Columbus campus.
Who was your favorite professor and why?
Dr. Adam Kiefer! Not only was he my organic 1 professor, I also got to do a Mercer On Mission with him to Belize where I learned so much about field work in science. He has seen me grow throughout my time at Mercer and wrote an invaluable letter of recommendation for medical school.
What is one of your favorite Mercer memories?
I loved to gather on the fourth floor of the Godsey Science Center and study with my friends, even if those study sessions slowly devolved into us talking about various aspects of our lives! So many people would come up, chime in or study alongside us, and it felt truly collaborative.
What was your favorite class and why?
My favorite class would have to be my biochemistry 1 class. The content truly made me feel like everything I had learned in the last four years clicked together and made me think deeper about processes I had only memorized at a surface level approach before. I wouldn’t appreciate the class so much if it was for Dr. Garland Crawford!
How do you plan on changing the world?
I plan on becoming a physician and serving minority communities whose voices often get lost in health care settings.
What advice do you have for incoming students?
Be yourself and put yourself out there! People who appreciate what you bring to the table will gravitate toward you, and you will build an unforgettable and everlasting network.
How did Mercer prepare you for your future?
I have gained invaluable research, clinical, volunteer and leadership experience at Mercer. I have learned to strive to continue being a lifelong learner, and I have grown as a human.
What makes Mercer special to you?
The feeling of family away from home.
