MACON, Ga. — Mercer University School of Engineering senior Grant Clark was named an Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Power and Energy Society (PES) Scholar.

The PES Scholarship Plus Initiative provides scholarships and real-world experience to undergraduates who are interested in power and energy engineering careers. Scholars are recognized for their academic achievement and meaningful engagement in power-engineering studies.

An electrical engineering major from Brentwood, Tennessee, at Mercer, Clark worked on a research team applying machine learning to reconstruct cosmic ray air showers, and he co‑authored the peer‑reviewed paper “The Mandalay Derivative for Nonsmooth Systems: Applications to Nonsmooth Control Barrier Functions.”

Dr. Makhin Thitsa, professor of electrical and computer engineering, was a co-author on the paper.

“Grant is talented, hardworking, and he brings great energy both in class and in the lab,” said Dr. Thitsa. “I have no doubt he’s going to be an amazing trailblazer in the field of electrical engineering.”

In addition to his research, Clark is a member of Mercer’s Tau Beta Pi engineering honor society and has served as the IEEE student chapter treasurer. After graduation, he plans to work in the power and energy industry, where he says he hopes to contribute to delivering safe, reliable and clean energy to communities.

“I appreciate the opportunity to receive this award. I’m especially thankful for the faculty in Mercer’s electrical engineering department for their dedication and support throughout my time here, and to my fiancée for encouraging me to apply.”
