Mercer University College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences will conduct a Latin Health Fair on Saturday, April 19, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The fair will be held at Norcross First United Methodist Church, 2500 Beaver Ruin Road.
The fair will offer free diabetes and blood pressure screenings, and will also provide information about pediatric immunization schedules, cancer awareness, heartburn awareness and women’s health issues. Pharmacists will be on hand to provide information and answer questions.
Translators will be available for Spanish-speaking patients.
The Latin Health Fair is sponsored by the Georgia Pharmacy Association, which has encouraged the state’s three pharmacy schools to hold such an event. Mercer’s fair has been coordinated by Sarah Phanco, president of Mercer’s American Pharmacists Association-Academy of Student Pharmacists chapter; Hillary Volsteadt, the APhA-ASP president-elect; and Elaine Mebel, a student at the University of Georgia and chair of the Academy of Students and Academicians of the Georgia Pharmacy Association.
“The main mission of the Latin Health Fair is to reach out to a patient population that may have a barrier to accessing health care,” said Phanco. “By offering free screenings and information regarding many other disease states, we are attempting to push the profession of pharmacy forward. We as pharmacists and student pharmacists are stepping out from behind our counters and into our communities to show how pharmacists are a great health information resource. We are a health care provider a patient can seek advice from for free—all it takes is a step into any local community pharmacy.”
