MACON – Dr. Jean Sumner, dean of Mercer University School of Medicine (MUSM), recently announced that Dr. Susan Codone has joined the medical school faculty as professor of medical education. She also assumed the role of senior associate dean for academic affairs, effective Jan. 4.
Dr. Codone joins MUSM with 15 years of experience as a professor and academic leader at Mercer. She holds the rank of professor of technical communication in the School of Engineering, and most recently served in the provost's office as director of the Center for Teaching and Learning, supporting all 12 schools and colleges of the University with faculty development and academic technology guidance.
“We are pleased to have Dr. Codone join the faculty and accept this important leadership role. She is a proven educator and committed to the continued delivery of a superior, effective curriculum to our students,” said Dr. Sumner.

Dr. Codone holds a Ph.D. in instructional design and development from the University of South Alabama and a Master of Business Administration from the University of West Florida.
Her expertise is in the design and management of instructional systems and materials, including curriculum management, course design, faculty and student support, and instructional technology, as well as professional communication.
At Mercer, Dr. Codone has served in the roles of professor, adviser, faculty developer, instructional designer, SACSOC accreditation team member, academic technology leader, member and chair of multiple University committees, and as a teaching and learning consultant to Mercer's schools and colleges.
She is a United States Fulbright Specialist and has served the Department of State on two Fulbright grants in the Dominican Republic, consulting with Universidad Central del Este. She is also a Georgia Governor's Teaching Fellow.
As senior associate dean of academic affairs, Dr. Codone will apply her academic training in instructional design and her years of experience at Mercer to sustain MUSM's mission of educating physicians and health professionals to meet the primary care and healthcare needs of rural and medically underserved areas of Georgia.
