Daya Jones is graduating from Mercer University’s College of Liberal Arts and Sciences with a Bachelor of Arts degree in creative writing.
What are your plans after graduation?
After graduation, I plan to work for my mom as an assistant for Encourage 365, a ministry she started for parents of children with special needs. I also plan to get some experience in the film industry through the Atlanta Film Society and possibly register for the Georgia Film Academy.
Who was your favorite professor and why?
My favorite professors are Dr. James Davis May and Chelsea Rathburn. Since I started taking creative writing courses at Mercer, they really challenged me to go beyond telling a story and allowed me to be vulnerable in sharing my experiences with others. I would not be the writer I am if it weren’t for their constant wisdom and encouragement.
How do you plan on changing the world?
I plan to change the world through my writing. I have a hard time communicating with people verbally, and I see writing as a second language to get my stories across. So, I plan to go into screenwriting to share my experiences with others like me and let them know that their stories matter.
What advice do you have for incoming students?
Everything you do, whether it is for school or in life, is good enough as it is. Never let anyone or anything shape the creativity inside you.
What makes Mercer special to you?
What makes Mercer special to me is that it a place to find your people. That there is someone who always understands and appreciates you for who and what you are. I am very grateful to find a community that is very accepting and open to connecting with new people.
