Elizabeth Pittman is graduating from Mercer University’s School of Medicine with a Doctor of Medicine.
What are your plans after graduation?
I have an emergency medicine residency at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
Who was your favorite professor and why?
Dr. Christy Bridges because she believed in my dream with me and supported me every step of the way. Even when others told me I wouldn’t make it, she encouraged me and shaped me into the physician I am becoming.
What is one of your favorite Mercer memories?
I have so many it’s hard to narrow it down to one memory. One of my favorites is getting to watch my little brother follow in my footsteps and begin his undergraduate career at Mercer while I was finishing medical school. It’s been so fun sharing the campus with him! Another memory is getting to celebrate with all of my friends on Match Day and watching their dreams come true!
What was your favorite class and why?
Medical practice — it’s where we practice clinical skills with standardized patients in order to better understand medical diagnoses. It ultimately created the foundation for our clinical skills such as physical exam and note writing for our rotations in third and fourth years of medical school.
How do you plan on changing the world?
After residency, I am going back to my rural hometown of Nashville, Georgia, to serve my community as a physician.
What advice do you have for incoming students?
Bet on yourself and never give up. Find a professor and friends who support your dream, and don’t look back.
How did Mercer prepare you for your future?
This will be my third degree from Mercer. The university’s extensive dedication to clinician skills and problem solving have helped create a solid foundation for my continued education. The smaller class sizes and group projects prepared me to collaborate with professionals of all fields in my future career.
What makes Mercer special to you?
The caliber of students it attracts is what makes Mercer special. I’ve met some lifelong friends who are all likeminded that encourage me everyday. I can’t imagine another school with a better group of peers.
