Ella Bissonnette is graduating from Mercer University’s College of Liberal Arts and Sciences with a Bachelor of Arts in creative writing and women’s and gender studies.
What are your plans after graduation?
I plan on getting my M.F.A. in poetry at the University of Florida. At UF, I will be serving as a graduate assistant and teach in both the university writing program and the creative writing department.
Who was your favorite professor and why?
My favorite professor was Professor Chelsea Rathburn. She was the instructor of record for my honors work, and she supported both myself and my writing, while still knowing when to push me to be the best student and writer I could be. She’s someone who truly cares about her students as people, and her passion and drive inspire me.
What was your favorite class and why?
My favorite class was contemporary poetry taught by Dr. James May. It was so interesting to think through the literary movements of contemporary poetry, and each student did a project on a writing institution, so it had direct, real world connections.
How do you plan on changing the world?
I plan on changing the world by teaching writing in an increasingly illiterate world. I believe everyone has a writer inside them and just needs the right support to help bring them out.
What advice do you have for incoming students?
My advice for an incoming student would be to get involved. I had so many cool opportunities, made countless friends, and was able to make my dreams and goals come true because I decided to get involved.
How did Mercer prepare you for your future?
Mercer prepared me for my future by giving me the opportunity to put myself out there and build my network, develop leadership and teaching skills, and grow as a person and as a writer.
What makes Mercer special to you?
Mercer is special to me because I made so many lifelong connections here. I met my boyfriend on a study abroad trip, met lifelong friends, and was mentored by and able to mentor so many people. Mercer is a school that truly values community and gives you the opportunity to build a community that can last your whole life.
