Lucy Roach is graduating from Mercer University’s College of Liberal Arts and Sciences with a Bachelor of Arts in English and communication studies.

What are your plans after graduation?

I will be attending a M.A. in communication program with the goal of earning my Ph.D. and becoming a college professor.

Who was your favorite professor and why?

Dr. Cameron Kunzelman. As my professor and mentor, he provided me with opportunities that allowed me to prepare for the next step in my academic journey. He believed in me and equipped me with the tools to become the best student I could be. From inviting me to join his lab to encouraging me to apply to a conference to present my work, I truly cannot thank him enough for the support and confidence he gave me throughout my time at Mercer.

How do you plan on changing the world?

I have had the privilege of learning from the most inquisitive, intelligent and encouraging professors in the communication studies and English departments. I plan to be a college professor one day. I hope to change the world by helping students find their voice and passion, just as the professors here helped me. I have some fantastic role models that have set the standard for what it means to be an excellent teacher. If I could pinpoint one thing Mercer has taught me about making an impact, it’s that changing the world truly begins with finding what you care about and pursuing it wholeheartedly.

What advice do you have for incoming students?

Take advantage of what Mercer can and will offer you. This doesn’t mean you have to attend every single event or join a club that may not be your thing. You should find what you love to do and pursue it. You will find your community and space for intellectual growth. This university wants you to grow into a person who will change the world, and they will equip you with the resources, support and environment to do so!

What makes Mercer special to you?

It sounds silly, but at Mercer, you are never just a number. This is a place where you find and create lasting connections. You matter, and your individual contribution is valued. I know the unique support, care and community I found at Mercer I would not have found anywhere else. Mercer has become my home, and I will cherish my time here for the rest of my life.
