Lydia Huthmaker, a Class of 2023 graduate of Mercer University‘s College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, earned a Bachelor of Arts in history.

What are your plans after graduation?

I plan to continue my career as a swim coach, and I applied to the University of Georgia for its Master of Arts in Educational Psychology program.

Who was your favorite professor and why?

My favorite professor was Joshua Holloway, lecturer of mathematics, because he genuinely cares for his students and always makes an effort to help them when they need it. He taught me math like I had never been able to understand before with my homeschool background. This allowed me to excel further in my other classes. He truly changed my life in the two classes I took with him.

What is one of your favorite Mercer memories?

The Homecoming football games. They were so much fun hanging out with friends and cheering on the Bears.

What was your favorite class and why?

My favorite class was African American history with Dr. Matthew Harper, associate professor of history and Africana studies. It was such an engaging and interesting class. All of us participated, and I loved learning more.

What advice do you have for incoming students?

Enjoy your time at Mercer. Don’t let yourself get so caught up in getting the perfect grade, but allow yourself to experience life here. You won’t regret it.
