MACON, Ga. — Mercer Theatre brings shock, suspense and theatrical illusion to the stage with A Night at the Grand Guignol: The Crimson Stage playing from Oct. 31-Nov. 9 at Tattnall Square Center for the Arts. Tickets are on sale now.
Inspired by the infamous historic Parisian theater known for its sensational horror plays, Théâtre du Grand-Guignol, the show confronts audiences with tales of madness, revenge and the grotesque. It’s a thrilling homage to early horror theater that challenges the line between terror and entertainment.
A series of short, visceral plays explores humanity’s dark impulses, with “Dark Window” and “When My Body Cried Out.” Additionally, short horror movies created by students in Dr. Clara Mengolini’s integrative curriculum and Spanish classes last year will play during the show.
Frani Rollins, associate professor of theater, said the production pushes creative and technical boundaries while honoring the theatrical roots of horror.
“This is a style of theater we have not tackled before,” said Rollins. “Horror demands a different way of thinking through timing, physical control and emotional commitment, which has been beneficial to the learning experience for our students. We are so proud of this work and how it will engage audiences for an innovative and daring experience.”
Performances will take place at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 31, Nov. 1 and Nov. 6-8, with matinee shows at 2:30 p.m. Nov. 2 and Nov. 9 in Tattnall Square Center for the Arts.
Mercer Theatre welcomes anyone to get involved in its productions throughout the year, even those who have not taken a theater class. To get involved with the Mercer Players, contact Rollins at rollins_f@mercer.edu
