MACON, Ga. — Mercer University’s Shafa Gilani, BUS/CLAS ‘28, has been named a 2026-27 Newman Civic Fellow by Campus Compact, a national coalition of colleges and universities working to advance the public purposes of higher education.
The Newman Civic Fellowship is a yearlong program that recognizes and supports student public problem solvers at Campus Compact member institutions. Fellows are nominated by their president or chancellor based on their potential for public leadership and their work with communities.
“I am so grateful to be part of a cohort that is so passionate and committed to public service,” said Gilani. “I’m really excited to learn from them throughout my journey as a fellow.”
From Marietta, Gilani serves as an associate justice on Mercer University’s Honor Council and is a Mercer Democracy Fellow for the 2026-27 academic year. After graduation, she plans to pursue a career as a federal employee in a way that focuses on education equity or voter rights.
Professor of Political Science and Co-Director of the McDonald Center for America’s Founding Principles Will R. Jordan, Ph.D., described Gilani as a terrific student who is conscientious and driven to succeed.
“She is deserving in every way of her selection as a Newman Civic Fellow,” said Jordan. “She is already a leader and problem-solver among her peers, and I have no doubt that she will put this opportunity to good use.”
