MACON, Ga. — Mercer University sophomore Shivani Trivedi was recently awarded the Fulbright Canada-Mitacs Globalink Research Internship (GRI) and will participate in a 12-week research internship under the supervision of Canadian academic institution faculty members.

“I am very grateful for receiving this internship. I am excited to finally have the chance to pursue my interest in neurobiology with the support of exceptional resources and mentors,” said Trivedi. “I can’t wait to do so in the new environment of Canada.”

The Fulbright Canada-Mitacs Globalink Research Internship is for U.S. students interested in undertaking advanced research projects in Canada in their area of interest in a variety of academic disciplines, including science, engineering, mathematics, the humanities and social sciences. Students are hosted by Canadian academic institution faculty members and are given the opportunity to take part in professional training and extensive opportunities for cultural, social and recreational experiences.

From Suwanee, Trivedi is a double-major in biochemistry and molecular biology and Spanish. At Mercer, she is a Stamps Scholar, Tift Scholar, in the Honors Program and Leadership Mercer. She is also on the debate team and is a supplemental instruction mentor for the Academic Resource Center.

“Outside of lecture, particularly through her lab project and our numerous discussions about research, genetics and the possible applications of biology, it became quite clear that Shivani had the true mindset of a scientist,” said Dr. Benjamin Greulich, assistant professor of biology. “She has a genuine intellectual curiosity for understanding biological systems on a deep, fundamental level, which I am quite certain will help her become an outstanding researcher.”

After graduation, Trivedi plans to earn a Ph.D. in biochemistry and conduct biomedical research. She aspires to help close the disparity in women’s health research and understand how and why Alzheimer’s disease presents differently in women than in men.

Mitacs Globalink Research Internships are currently available at more than 70 academic institutions across Canada.
