MACON – Dr. Susan Codone, associate professor of technical communication in the Mercer University School of Engineering, has been appointed director of the Center for Teaching and Learning by Provost Dr. Scott Davis.
Drawing on the first two elements of the University's mission statement of “to teach” and “to learn,” the mission of the Center for Teaching and Learning is to support continuous, long-term faculty growth in course design, pedagogy, andragogy and assessment methods in order to increase teaching effectiveness and student learning.
“I am pleased that Dr. Codone has agreed to serve as director of the Center for Teaching and Learning. Not only has she demonstrated excellence in the classroom, she also has a firm grasp on the best pedagogical practices related to effective teaching. I look forward to working with her as she builds a center that supplements our faculty effort in the classroom to enhance student learning,” said Dr. Davis.
The Center's activities will be designed to support the mission and goals of the University while also producing measurable and observable results that will be used to promote overall institutional effectiveness.
“Building the Center for Teaching and Learning is a natural step forward in the momentum and evolution of Mercer and will allow all faculty members access to resources needed for even greater effectiveness in the classroom,” said Dr. Codone.
“Ultimately, everything we do as professors is focused on increasing student learning, improving student performance and graduating students who are ready to change the world. Equipping our faculty to do this even more effectively than we already do is our major goal. I am excited to be part of this process and to serve the University in new ways.”
Dr. Codone has served on the School of Engineering faculty since 2002. She earned her Ph.D. in instructional design and development from the University of South Alabama in 2000. Her research interests include the scholarship of teaching, learner self-efficacy, professional communication, and instructional design and technology.
