MACON—Valdosta resident Stephaine DeAnne Powell recently was awarded the George Waldo Woodruff Award of Excellence at 2003 commencement of the Mercer University Law School.
This is the highest scholastic honor given by the Walter F. George School of Law. The award honors distinguished businessman, proponent of education and friend of the law school, George Waldo Woodruff.
Powell ranked first in her class of 148 students. She was named to the Dean’s List each semester of her study at Mercer. She is a member of the Association of Women Law Students and was the editor of the Mercer Law Review for 2002-2003. She was also a member of the Brainerd Currie Honor Society and recipient of the Faculty Award for Outstanding Seniors in honor of her academic scholarship and leadership qualities. In addition, Powell received a Center for Computer Assisted Legal Instruction’s Excellence for the Future Award for receiving the highest grade in an individual semester class.
The Valdosta resident worked from May 2001 to April 2002 as a law clerk for the firm of Reynolds & McArthur. She also was a summer associate for McKenna, Long & Aldridge in Atlanta and will now join the firm. Prior to law school, Powell was a resource coordinator with the lottery-funded Pre-K program for Children’s Friend in Valdosta. She is the daughter of Dale and Lavonne Powell of Valdosta.
