MACON, Ga. — Mercer University’s Tift College of Education will hold an informational session for teachers and school administrators interested in Mercer’s Educational Leadership program, including the Master of Education in Educational Leadership and the new Ph.D. in Educational Leadership. The drop-in open house will be from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Monday, April 10, in the W.G. Lee Alumni House at the corner of College Street and Ash Street on Mercer’s Macon campus.

The new Ph.D. program is designed to help meet the growing need for qualified school administrators within the state of Georgia. Mercer will offer the Ph.D. program in Educational Leadership on its Macon and Atlanta campuses. The Ph.D. program has two tracks: P-12 School Leadership, which will begin this fall and provide a terminal degree in educational leadership for those wanting to become school and school system leaders; and a Higher Education Administration track, which is scheduled to begin in fall 2007.

Classes will be held in the evenings and on Saturdays during the school year and include summer courses as well, allowing in-service teachers and administrators to further their education while continuing to work. This P-12 Track will be open to candidates who have experience as teachers and hold an initial school leadership certification (L-5) from the Professional Standards Commission. Candidates can complete their coursework in nine semesters, which will take a minimum of three years.

Begun in 2005, Mercer’s M.Ed. in Educational Leadership is designed to prepare teachers to become school leaders. The program is offered in cohorts in Macon, Atlanta and Henry County. Designed to assist educators in the development of leadership knowledge and skills, the program is for individuals who wish to prepare themselves for administrative or supervisory positions of instructional leadership. The two-year program is based on the latest educational leadership standards and fulfills the requirements for the master’s degree in Educational Leadership.  Further, add-on initial certification in educational leadership is offered for candidates who currently hold master’s degrees in education.
