Mercer Press’ New Book, A Titanic Love Story: Ida and Isidor Straus, Launches in Conjunction with Theatre Macon’s production of Titanic: A New Musical

Mercer University Press officially launches A Titanic Love Story by author June Hall McCash on Friday at Theatre Macon, in conjunction with the company’s production of production of Titanic: A New Musical. There will be three more performances this month including two with book signings by the author. In addition to Friday’s launch, there will be performances Saturday, as well as April 13, 20 and 21, with the author signing her book on April 20 and 21. Book sales begin at 7 p.m. for the shows, which are 8 p.m. curtain.

Filled with 40 pages of photographs, A Titanic Love Story traces the lives of Isidor and Ida Straus, both German Jewish immigrants who arrived as children in America in the early 1850s. Follow the Strauses’ life from Georgia to New York, where the family became the wealthy owners of Macy’s Department Store in New York. The Strauses were people committed to the welfare of their family, their city, their country, and those less fortunate. Ironically, their final happy days in the south of France lead to their unexpected sailing on the Titanic. Both died as they had lived, with dignity, honor, loyalty to one another and compassion for others.

Townsend School of Music master’s student Billy Bishop will appear in the role of Isidor Straus in Theatre Macon’s production of Titanic: A New Musical.

June Hall McCash is the author, co-author or editor of seven books, six nonfiction works and a historical novel, for which she won the 2011 Georgia Author of the Year Award for first novel. She holds Ph.D. and M.A. degrees from Emory University and a B.A. from Agnes Scott College. Before becoming a full-time writer, McCash was founding director of the university honors program and chair of the Department of Foreign Languages at Middle Tennessee State University. She divides her time between Murfreesboro,Tenn., and Jekyll Island.
