As we ramp up for the new academic year, Dr. Lynn Denny, medical director for Mercer Medicine Campus Health, talked to The Den about how to get health care at the recently reorganized on-campus medical clinic.
Campus Health used to be called the Student Health Center. Why the change?
Treating students is always our No. 1 priority. However, we also see Mercer faculty and staff for urgent care visits. We wanted to have an all-inclusive name, so we decided on Campus Health.
Who can access Campus Health?
Any currently enrolled Mercer student, regardless of type of insurance, can see us! We can also see current Mercer faculty or staff with an urgent care need, but we do not take the place of a primary care provider for them. Employees who are looking for a primary care provider can visit the Mercer Medicine clinic located in downtown Macon.
What is Mercer Medicine?
Mercer Medicine is the clinical practice for Mercer University School of Medicine faculty, and a subsidiary of the School of Medicine. Campus Health is operated by Mercer Medicine, which also runs a multi-specialty clinic in downtown Macon and six rural primary care clinics.
What services do you provide for students?
Health care visits for acute illnesses and injuries, various immunizations, testing for sexually transmitted infections, women’s health (excluding IUD and Nexplanon placement), travel clinics, health education, primary health care if the student has Core Administrative Insurance, and mental health visits by primary care providers, not psychiatrists. If we can’t resolve your issue at Campus Health, we will refer you to a local specialist who can help, so we’re a great resource, especially when you’re first getting started at Mercer.
What mental health services are available at Campus Health?
At Campus Health, our primary care providers do an initial assessment and will treat patients within the scope of their training. At times, students will need to be referred to a mental health practitioner and/or therapist. We work closely with Mercer Counseling and Psychological Services to make sure you get the care you need.
What about our campuses where there is not a Campus Health center?
We have physical locations at the Homer and Ruth Drake Field House in Macon and Sheffield Student Center in Atlanta, but our services are available to all Mercer students and employees. Telehealth visits are available for Mercer students and faculty/staff as long as they are physically located in the state of Georgia at the time of the visit.

We’re really excited that online scheduling is now available! You can also make an appointment at Campus Health by calling us. Our Macon phone number is 478-301-2696. Our Atlanta phone number is 678-547-6130. While walk-ins are possible, we highly recommend making an appointment because walk-in appointment availability is limited.
Can Campus Health be my primary care provider?
For students with Mercer’s insurance (Core Administrative Insurance), Campus Health is considered their primary care provider. For students with other health insurances, they can schedule an appointment to discuss our being their primary care. Employees who are looking for a primary care provider can visit Mercer Medicine.
