MACON - The Wal-Mart Foundation, as part of its community outreach in Georgia, has awarded Mercer University a grant to develop summer seminars for high school teachers to learn how to incorporate the Great Books into their curricula. Through the grant, Mercer's Center for the Teaching of America's Western Foundations is developing a summer seminar program and Web site that will help the teachers to understand and teach the Great Books. The two-week seminars will be modeled after Mercer's Great Books program and be organized around the theme "Citizenship and the Culture of Freedom."

VIRGINIA, Liberia - The group of Mercer University faculty and staff in Liberia for their Mercer On Mission trip celebrated the inaugural "Mercer Day" on June 10 with their hosts, the Ricks Institute, in recognition of the partnership between the school and the University. Ten Mercer student-teachers from the Tift College of Education, three faculty members and four mentor teachers in the country for the Mercer On Mission trip.
MACON, Ga. -- Mercer has announced that Clear Channel Broadcasting Inc. will serve as the flagship radio network for the school's men's basketball games in 2009-2010. The broadcaster's Fox Sports Radio 1670 AM, WFSM, will carry all of the Bears' games live next season, while sister FM stations, WPCH 96.5 and WZCH 102.5, will also simulcast games that tip off at 6 p.m. or later. In addition, the games will be available on the World Wide Web on the Fox Sports Radio 1670 site at http://www.foxsports1670.com and the Mercer web site at http://www.mercerbears.com."We are extremely pleased with the contract with Clear Channel," said Athletics Director Bobby Pope. The group has begun its work of fitting and distributing Mercer-designed prosthetic legs and will continue through June 25.The group is one of seven Mercer On Mission '09 teams and is providing the new low-cost prosthetic legs to amputees living in and around Ho Chi Minh City.
Mercer University was among the first place winners in the 2009 Better Newspaper Contest, sponsored by the Georgia Press Association (GPA). An associate member of the GPA, The Mercerian magazine was awarded first place in the category of "In-House Publication."The Mercerian was redesigned into its current magazine format in the fall of 2008. The inaugural issue was the one nominated and ultimately judged as a winner by GPA. ATLANTA - Two students in Mercer University's new physician assistant program have garnered scholarships from one of the leading foundations in the profession. The students, Quentin Farmer and Dannyelle Wilcox of the College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, were recently announced as winners of 2009 Physician Assistant Foundation Scholarship Program. The two are the first winners for the College, and both are members of the College's first cohort of students, which began in January 2008

MACON - Mercer University's School of Engineering is launching two new degree programs this fall to help meet the nation's mounting environmental challenges. In August, the School will welcome its first classes for the Master of Science in Engineering in environmental engineering - for students with engineering degrees - and the Master of Science in environmental systems - aimed at practicing professionals with degrees in other science disciplines.
ATLANTA - Mercer University's College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences presented Daniel E. Buffington with its Distinguished Alumnus Award during the College's commencement on May 2. Buffington is president and CEO of Clinical Pharmacology Services Inc., in Clearwater, Fla. The Distinguished Alumni Award is the highest award presented to alumni of the College who have achieved recognition for academic, scientific or leadership contributions in science, business or public service and who has shown exemplary support and service to the community and to the College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences.
