MACON - Mercer University President William D. Underwood today announced the appointment of Dr. Wade Shaw, professor of engineering systems at Florida Institute of Technology in Melbourne, Fla., and editor-in-chief of IEEE Engineering Management Review, as dean of Mercer's School of Engineering, effective July 1.
MACON - Prominent author and Christian scholar Dr. Marcus J. Borg has been named the 2009 Harry Vaughan Smith Distinguished Visiting Professor of Christianity at Mercer University. Dr. Borg will give three lectures as part of his appointment. All three are free and open to the public.
MACON - One of America's most prominent food writers and an expert on Southern cuisine, John T. Edge, will speak at Mercer on Wednesday, Feb. 25 at 7 p.m. in Newton Chapel Auditorium. His lecture, "Cornpone and Buttermilk: Rethinking Southern Culinary Icons," is free and open to the public.
ATLANTA - The Rev. Chuck Poole, senior pastor of Northminster Baptist Church in Jackson, Miss., will deliver the 2009 William L. Self Preaching Lectures, Feb. 16-17, for Mercer University's McAfee School of Theology. Poole's topic will be "Try to Say It Softly - Prophetic Preaching in a Pastoral Voice."
MACON - The Fifth Annual Building the Beloved Community Symposium, sponsored by Mercer University's Mercer Commons, will be held Feb. 17-18 in Macon. This year's event is built on the theme, "Next Steps Toward the Beloved Community," and will include presentations by two noted pastors and authors.
ATLANTA - Mercer University's College of Continuing and Professional Studies has earned the prestigious national accreditation from the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) for its Master of Science in Counseling program. The accreditation came at the end of an intensive three-year review process for the Atlanta-based program.
ATLANTA - The McAfee School of Theology has revised its Doctor of Ministry degree to make it more flexible for working students, potentially shortening the time it takes to complete the degree by as much as a year, the School announced today.
MACON - With college football's national signing day looming, Mercer University economics professor Allen K. Lynch, Ph.D., and two colleagues have launched a Web site - http://ssbea.mercer.edu/recruiting.htm - featuring predictions for the college choices of the top 250 players who have yet to commit from this year's prep football recruiting class, according to Rivals.com. While Dr. Lynch is a sports fan, he's not a recruiting expert. However, the econometric model that the group has developed is. For those players on the list that have chosen a school, it is predicting at a greater than 75 percent rate.
MACON - Award-winning poet Mark Jarman has been named the 2009 Ferrol A. Sams Jr. Distinguished Writer in Residence at Mercer University. In addition to teaching an upper-level writing course, Jarman will give a poetry reading, a lecture and sponsor a reading while in residence at Mercer.
MACON - The Robert McDuffie Center for Strings, a special institute within the Townsend School of Music at Mercer University, has expanded its program and is accepting bass students for the 2009-2010 academic year. The Center has openings for two bass students, and auditions to fill the spaces will be held Feb. 21.
