This October, The Grand Opera House is presenting Porgy and Bess on Oct. 2-3 at 7:30 p.m. The show is a part of The Grand's annual six-part series of nationally touring Broadway musicals. Tickets are $35 and $40.
Gershwin's musical drama Porgy and Bess tells the moving story of the cripple Porgy and the residents of Charleston's famed Catfish Row. Originally billed as a "folk opera," Porgy and Bess introduces classic Gershwin songs like "Summertime," "I Got Plenty O' Nuttin" and "It Ain't Neccesarily So." Recognized as an American masterpiece, the story entwines pride, prejudice, pathos and passion through its jazz and blues-influenced score.

MACON-In an effort to better structure student programs that promote school spirit and interest in student activities, a spirit team coordinator has been hired. The purpose of the new role will be to organize the efforts of the Mercer cheerleaders, mascot, pep band and, in the near future, a pom-pom squad.

What: Students are hosting a mock debate and election of the presidential candidates. They will simulate President George Bush, Senator John Kerry, and consumer advocate Ralph Nader and discuss all of the major issues. This event is free and open to the Mercer community.

MACON - In an effort to meet local communities' needs in a newly-merging field, Mercer University's School of Medicine recently announced post-master's certificate programs in Medical Family Therapy and Pediatric Family Therapy. These certificate programs, each of which can be completed in one year and offer courses primarily in late afternoon and evening, are designed to prepare clinicians to practice in specialty areas of family therapy.
MELBOURNE, FLA. -- The Mercer Binary Bears Computer Programming Team recently captured the attention of many colleges and universities en route to their second straight Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) Division II Title. The Mercer students Samson Alva, Cody Boisclair and Britt Daniel kept toe-to-toe with teams from Georgia Tech and the University of Central Florida, the longstanding powerhouses and thoroughbreds of computer programming contests in the Southeast.
During the five-hour contest held on the campus of Florida Tech, students had to solve as many problems as they could with one computer. The problem set included 10 challenging problems with an airplane theme and some very difficult test cases. The Mercer team kept its poise throughout, and placed third in the overall standings among 68 teams by solving five problems with the fewest penalty points. MACON, GA- Six student delegates from Mercer University's student programming board, QuadWorks, attended the 2004 National Association for Campus Activities (NACA) South Regional Conference in Winston-Salem, N.C. During the conference, QuadWorks was honored with the Outstanding Delegation Award and runner-up for the Board of Excellence Award.
The student delegates present at the conference to receive the award on behalf of Mercer were: Amanda Varley, Naicie Roper, Rosalyn Brown, Jamanda Turner, Katie Harrell and Leslie Lester.
