MACON - Mercer University awarded an honorary doctor of science degree to W. Douglas Skelton, M.D., public health director for Chatham and Effingham Counties, Georgia Department of Human Resources, at the School of Medicine commencement on May 6. Mercer University President R. Kirby Godsey made the presentation to Skelton after Julie Gerberding, M.D., M.P.H., director of the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and Prevention, gave the commencement address.
MACON - Macon resident Amy Bourgeois Moore, M.D., was presented the Arnold P. Gold Foundation Student Humanism in Medicine Award from Mercer University School of Medicine during commencement May 6 in Macon. Moore, who also received her doctor of medicine degree at the commencement, was chosen by the medical school faculty for her empathetic, sensitive and respective behavior in providing patient care.

MACON, Ga.- Mercer's 18th annual "Big Auction," to benefit the Bears' athletic program, will be held today at the University Center. Silent items will be up for bid from noon until 7 p.m., with live items going on the block at 7:30 p.m. There is no admission charge and refreshments will be provided this year for those in attendance.   Numerous outstanding items will be up for bid, including trips to Puerto Rico, Mexico, Disney World, Hilton Head and a week-long stay at a Vermont chalet. This past Saturday's Mercer commencement -- which included graduates from the College of Liberal Arts, School of Engineering, Stetson School of Business and Economics and Tift College of Education -- will be re-broadcast Wednesday, May 17, on WCOX15 on Cox Communications (locals only, channel 15). The commencement, which was held Saturday morning at the University Center, was broadcast live by Cox on channel 15.   The re-broadcast, which will give those who participated or attended the ceremony an opportunity to watch it on local (Macon) cable television, will begin at 6 p.m.
ATLANTA - Mercer University will hold its final four commencements of the year on Saturday, May 20, on the University's Cecil B. Day Campus, 3001 Mercer University Drive, Atlanta. The ceremonies will be the last that Dr. R. Kirby Godsey will preside over as president and CEO of Mercer. Dr. Godsey, the longest serving president in the University's history and the longest serving seated university president in Georgia, will step down as president on June 30 after more than 27 years and will become chancellor and university professor.   On Saturday, Dr. Godsey will shake the hand of the final graduate of his presidency after more 250 commencements and more than 30,000 graduates. Macon, GA---This weekend, Mercer University and Cox Communications will partner to bring the Mercer graduation ceremony to all Middle Georgians. Home viewers can watch the ceremony live and from the comfort of their homes on Saturday, May 13, at 10 a.m. on WCOX15, Locals Only (Cox Channel 15).
