ATLANTA - The class of 2006 at Mercer University's Southern School of Pharmacy has set a record for academic achievement.  For the first time in the School's history, nine fourth-year students have 4.0 grade point averages and will receive the R.C. ATLANTA - Guests at the 2006 commencement ceremony of Mercer University's Southern School of Pharmacy will witness two significant moments in the history of the pharmacy school.  Eight candidates will receive Ph.D. degrees, a record number for the research program. MACON, Ga. - The search for the nation's best high school violinists, cellists and violists is nearing completion, as the application deadline approaches for the second annual Robert McDuffie & Friends Labor Day Festival for Strings. Applications and audition materials are due by Friday, May 19, for the four-day festival, which will be held Aug. 31-Sept. 4. MACON - A new line-up has been announced for Mercer University's largest commencement, which is scheduled for 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 13, in the University Center on the Macon campus. Mercer President and CEO R. Kirby Godsey will deliver the commencement address, followed by a short performance by jazz and rock and roll musician Chuck Leavell, who is, most notably, keyboardist for the Rolling Stones. Four hundred sixty-seven students from the College of Liberal Arts, Eugene W. Stetson School of Business and Economics, the School of Engineering and the Tift College of Education will receive degrees during the ceremony.  The University will hold 10 commencements during May. Two honorary degrees will be awarded during the Macon commencement: Doctor of Music to Chuck Leavell, musician and conservationist; and Doctor of Humanities to Philip Walden (posthumously), founder of Capricorn Records and Velocette Records.   ###

MACON/ATLANTA - Mercer University will hold 10 commencements in two cities over three weekends during the month of May as more than 1,500 graduates receive their degrees. This year's exercises will be the final ceremonies that Dr. R. Kirby Godsey will preside over as president and CEO of Mercer. Dr. Godsey, the longest serving president in the University's history, will step down as president on June 30 after more than 27 years and will become chancellor and university professor.   President Godsey will give the address on Saturday, May 13, at the Macon Commencement, which includes the School of Engineering, the College of Liberal Arts, the Eugene W. Stetson School of Business and Economics and the Tift College of Education. MCDONOUGH - Mercer University's Henry County Regional Academic Center will hold an information session this week for its two summer sessions as well as the two fall sessions. Adults interested in earning a bachelor's degree through the Center's evening and weekend programs are invited to the free open house at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 27. Macon, Ga. - The Board of Trustees of Mercer University, in its annual spring meeting, approved several historic motions today. The two-and-a-half-hour session was the last regular Trustees meeting of Mercer President R. Kirby Godsey's 27-year administration. Trustees took action to amend the University's charter, establish a school of music, and name the historic Administration Building.    In a final step in the discontinuance of the University's relationship with the Georgia Baptist Convention, the Trustees amended Mercer's charter to give the Board of Trustees "the exclusive authority to determine the eligibility and qualifications of any person for service on the Board of Trustees, and said determination shall be final and conclusive."  This action removed all authority the Georgia Baptist Convention had in the approval process of electing Trustees.   As part of the University's commitment to sustaining its Baptist identity, the Trustees added to the...
WHO: Thirty teams of computer programmers from more than a dozen colleges and universities across the Southeast, including Georgia Tech, Wofford College and Augusta State University. Mercer University's Binary Bears will field five teams in the event. WHAT: Mercer's computer science department's Spring Programming Competition WHEN:   1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, April 22 WHERE:  The Computer Science Building off College Street on Mercer's Macon Campus. WHY:  Teams are competing for awards in two divisions. The competition will pit three-person teams in the divisions against one another to see who can program their way through six to 10 problems the fastest and with the fewest errors. There will be many opportunities for video and photos.
