The event will feature a keynote address by Justice Verda M. Colvin, who was appointed to the Georgia Supreme Court on July 20, 2021, by Gov. Brian Kemp. She is the first African-American female appointed by a Republican governor to the state’s high court.

In addition to the keynote address, students will present readings of selected excerpts from Dr. King’s speeches and writings, emphasizing his enduring commitment to justice and civic responsibility.

“The Martin Luther King Jr. Program is a vital expression of Mercer University’s commitment to leadership, service and social responsibility, while also strengthening its enduring relationship with the Macon community,” said Tracy B. Artis, executive director of The Dr. Joseph M. Hendricks Center for Campus Initiatives and Federal TRIO Programs. “More than a commemoration, the program invites reflection, dialogue and action, encouraging participants to engage thoughtfully with Dr. King’s vision of justice and beloved community. By bringing together students, faculty, and community members, it fosters unity, inspires leadership and affirms that meaningful progress is achieved through collective effort. In doing so, the program ensures that Dr. King’s legacy remains a living force, guiding Mercer and Macon toward a more just and compassionate future.”

The campus community and public are invited to attend the meaningful evening of reflection and inspiration. Registration is strongly encouraged and required for Mercer students and staff.
