MACON — Mercer University School of Engineering senior Travis White Jr. has been awarded a Tau Beta Pi scholarship for the 2024-25 academic year.

The Fellowship Board of the engineering honor society Tau Beta Pi selected 253 engineering students from 1,328 applicants nationwide to receive the scholarship.

“This award has motivated me by displaying the fervor that engineers maintain in supporting one another. I believe this support allows the profession to continue to thrive,” said White. “It is my hope that my further study and engineering development will demonstrate the value this award has brought to my education.”

Tau Beta Pi scholarships are awarded to members entering their senior year of study based on the competitive criteria of high scholarship, campus leadership and service and promise of future contributions to the engineering profession.

“We congratulate Travis on earning the prestigious Tau Beta Pi Scholarship,” said Dr. Laura W. Lackey, dean of the School of Engineering. “This recognition reflects his exceptional academic achievements and his commitment to leadership and service. We are incredibly proud of his dedication and promise for a future of meaningful contributions to the engineering profession.”

White, from Lizella, is a mechanical engineering major enrolled in the School of Engineering 4+1 Integrated Degree program. He says after completing his graduate degree, he hopes to apply his knowledge in the aeronautical and astronautical engineering sectors to further advance the field of aerospace.

At Mercer, White is an Engineering Honors student who has been named to the President’s List every semester. He has received mathematics department awards for calculus I, calculus II, multivariable calculus, and a physics department Outstanding Student Award in general physics. White is a member of the Tau Beta Pi Engineering Honor Society and the Pi Mu Epsilon Mathematics Honor Society.

Tau Beta Pi was founded at Lehigh University in 1885. With 257 collegiate chapters and 51 active alumni chapters, it has initiated 640,000 members in its 139-year history and is the world’s largest engineering society.
