MACON, Ga. — Internationally acclaimed artists perform alongside Mercer University students and faculty in the Fabian Concert Series, showcasing the elegance of chamber music in a program curated by Amy Schwartz Moretti, director of the Robert McDuffie Center for Strings.
The program for the latest concert in the series includes Schulhoff’s Duo for Violin and Cello, Boccherini’s String Quintet in E Major, Op. 11, No. 5, and Brahms’ Sextet No. 2 in G Major, Op. 36.
The concert will take place at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 3 in Fickling Hall. Tickets are $20 general admission and available online. Admission is free at the door to any students or faculty/staff with a Mercer ID or other valid student ID. Call (478) 301-5470 to reserve or pay at the door.
“Boccherini’s work showcases elegance and the cello’s prominence in classical chamber music, Schulhoff’s Duo adds a dynamic 20th-century perspective, and Brahms’ Sextet represents the richness and depth of Romantic chamber music,” Moretti said. “Together, the pieces highlight the stylistic range and expressive possibilities of chamber music across eras”
The evening will include respected chamber musicians Jaime Laredo, Sharon Robinson and Annie Fullard, playing alongside students and faculty.
“Preparing and rehearsing for the concert has been such an exhilarating experience,” said sophomore cellist Peter O’Malley. “Playing alongside the great Jaime Laredo, Sharon Robinson and Annie Fullard is a dream come true. It’s pretty incredible to share the stage with musicians who were so formative to my own growth.”
Moretti said the concert is intended to bring together musicians of different generations. She uses the different pieces to highlight all the different capabilities of chamber music through the eras.
“This allows students to learn directly from world-class performers while performing alongside their own mentors,” she said. “This kind of collaboration deepens musical understanding, builds community, and models professional chamber music at the highest level.”
The Fabian concert series will continue throughout the spring semester, with concerts on March 10 and April 21 in Fickling Hall. The March 10 concert will feature the Ehnes Quartet, of which Moretti is a member. The quartet will perform Beethoven’s Quartet Op. 18, No. 2 and Brahms’ Piano Quintet. The April 21 concert will feature Beethoven’s “Archduke” Trio and Piano Quintet in F minor, Op. 14 by Franck.
In addition, the Fabian Concert Series just announced that it will debut at the world-renowned Spivey Hall in Morrow, with performances March 11 and April 22, marking the first expansion of the series beyond Macon.
