Michael Mallard graduated from Mercer University’s College of Liberal Arts and Sciences with a Bachelor of Arts in sociology and communication studies.

What are your plans after graduation?

I plan to work in educational administration to help the next generation of students and educators change the world.

What is one of your favorite Mercer memories?

Getting to travel the world through Mercer’s Office of Global Engagement, especially working at a nonprofit in Cape Town, South Africa, where I helped implement new marketing initiatives for their programs. I was also able to visit the United Kingdom and Spain through Mercer’s international programs.

What was your favorite class and why?

Sociology of race and ethnicity with Dr. Laura Simon, associate professor of sociology. It challenged me to think critically about who I am and what the world is really like, and how I can spread love and fairness wherever I go. Personally, I think every Mercerian — and every human — could benefit from taking this class.

What advice do you have for incoming students?

Embrace change. Don’t put all your eggs in one basket with one major, one friend group or one student organization. You will live what feels like a hundred lifetimes over these four years, and that is a wonderful gift.

How did Mercer prepare you for your future?

Mercer prepared me for my future by offering me a breadth of opportunities beyond the traditional classroom. Some of my favorite Mercer memories have been working with students and faculty in student employment and extracurricular activities.
