Pauline Wilder graduated from Mercer University’s College of Education with a Master of Arts in Teaching in elementary education.

What are your plans after graduation?

My plans are to continue teaching in the Bibb County School District and help shape future leaders who will become lawyers, doctors, judges and whatever else God has in store for them. I want to encourage and inspire students to believe in themselves, work hard and pursue their dreams. My goal is to make a positive impact in their lives, just as great teachers have done for me.

Who was your favorite professor and why?

The late Dr. Charles Roberts was my favorite math professor because when I first came into his class, I did not like math at all. However, he completely changed my attitude toward it. He taught math in such a simple and engaging way, almost like a pre-K teacher introducing numbers for the first time, which made learning fun and less intimidating. Dr. Roberts spent countless hours after class helping struggling students and even gave up many weekends to make sure we truly understood the material. He was deeply devoted to his students and to Mercer University. His patience, dedication and passion for teaching made a lasting impact on me, and I will always appreciate the way he inspired confidence in his students.

What is one of your favorite Mercer memories?

One of my favorite memories at Mercer University happened during my freshman year. One day, I was walking around campus admiring the beautiful buildings and grounds when, out of the blue, President William D. Underwood walked up to me and began having one of the most inspirational conversations with me about education. At the time, I did not even realize who he was until I asked him his name. I was truly honored just to be in his presence. That moment has always stayed with me because his kindness and encouragement made me feel valued and inspired. It still brings a smile to my heart and face whenever I think about it.

What advice do you have for incoming students?

My advice for incoming students is to never be afraid to ask questions or ask for help when you need it. Stay focused, work hard and believe in yourself even when things become challenging. Take advantage of every opportunity to learn and grow, and remember that mistakes are part of the learning process. Surround yourself with positive people who encourage you to succeed, and never give up on your goals. Most importantly, trust God, stay determined and always do your best because your education can open doors to endless opportunities.

What makes Mercer special to you?

What makes Mercer University special to me is that, as a young lady, my dream was always to become a graduate of Mercer. By God’s grace, I received a double blessing. I was not only able to earn my bachelor’s degree, but I was also honored to earn my master’s degree as well. Mercer helped shape me into the person and educator I am today. The support, education and experiences I gained there will always hold a special place in my heart. I am proud to say that I am not just a Bear — I am a Double Bear.
