Samantha Cannon, a Class of 2023 graduate from Mercer University‘s College of Professional Advancement, earned a Bachelor of Science in homeland security and emergency management.

What are your plans after graduation?

I plan to pursue a career in emergency management aimed at disaster relief and all that comes with it.

Who was your favorite professor and why?

Dr. Dick Martin, professor of public safety, was my favorite because he showed me grace and compassion and pushed me to succeed at the same time. He challenged me in the ways that I needed, and I learned a lot from his courses.

What is one of your favorite Mercer memories?

One of my favorite Mercer memories was when The Den published a story about my work with Hurricane Ian relief efforts. It was an honor.

What was your favorite class and why?

My favorite class was introduction to homeland security and emergency management. My passion for the work makes me a little biased, but it just really helped solidify that path for me.

What makes Mercer special to you?

I transferred to Mercer after going to two other Georgia schools with two other majors before finding the one I wanted at Mercer. This school is special to me because it is where I was finally able to settle down academically, identify and secure my passion, and feel supported by the University throughout.
