Tyshian Innocent, a 2020 graduate of Mercer University‘s Tift College of Education, earned a Bachelor of Science in Education, specializing in middle grades education.

What are your plans after graduation?

I have signed a contract for the 2020-21 school year as a seventh grade mathematics educator. I am excited to enter the classroom next school year.

Who was your favorite professor and why?

My favorite professor was Dr. Cynthia Anderson at the Henry County Regional Academic Center. Not only is she knowledgeable and shows dedication to the content she teaches, but she took it upon herself to build deeper relationships with her students. I now feel I have a meaningful relationship that’ll last me a lifetime.

What was your favorite class and why?

My favorite class was the classroom management course I took with Dr. Anderson during student teaching. This course was the last hands-on course in my educator prep program. I was able to immediately apply things I learned and decide what I would take into my own classroom.

How do you plan on changing the world?

I plan to change the world one student at a time. In the classroom, I will teach my students more than mathematics. I plan to teach my students how to be better global citizens.

How did Mercer prepare you for your future?

Mercer’s rigorous curriculum and high expectations for its students prepared me for my future in many ways. I am better equipped to take on any challenge and conquer my dreams. I don’t fear any obstacle that comes my way. I have shown myself what I am most capable of by completing my degree program.

What makes Mercer special to you?

Mercer will always hold a special place in my heart. Mercer University is where I found myself. I learned of my true potential during my time at Mercer. My patience, strength and resilience were tested, and I passed the test.
