MACON – McEachern Art Center (the MAC) will present a series of diptych photographs by Stephanie Sutton that aims to tell a story about the artist’s food choices in “FOODFACE.” The show will have an opening reception on Oct. 4 at 6 p.m. and will run through Nov. 16.
Featuring 99 photos and video installations, “FOODFACE” records the last thing Sutton ate and her face each day. Sutton is currently an assistant professor in photography and expanded media at Winthrop University in South Carolina.
“This index was intended to create a photographic system of accountability for my daily food choices and their direct impact on my physical appearance,” Sutton said. “Instead of visible weight loss in the portraits, the timeline reveals the faces of waning hope, desperation, and ultimately, the surrender to the all-too-familiar feeling of defeat.”
Audience members are encouraged to walk the exhibition on a linear path with Sutton’s journey as they explore the gallery.
MAC Director Johnny Cohen originally met Sutton as his instructor at the University of Georgia, when he was an undergraduate taking art classes. “I have always admired her work for its simplicity, complexity and powerful message. This will be the first time ‘FOODFACE’ is exhibited in a gallery setting, and I am honored that Macon will have the opportunity to experience this remarkable work,” said Cohen.
“FOODFACE” will have an opening reception during downtown Macon’s First Friday on Oct. 4 from 6-8 p.m. The MAC is located at 332 2nd Street, Macon and has regular operating hours Thursday-Saturday from 4-8 p.m. Admission is always free and open to the public. Media and educators may access the gallery outside of normal hours by appointment by emailing cohen_j@mercer.edu. Find out more at macmacon.com
