Mercer to Host Public Memorial Service for ‘Papa Joe’ Hendricks on Jan. 23

MACON – A celebration of the life of Mercer alumnus and long-time, beloved faculty member Dr. Joseph M. Hendricks will be held Jan. 23 at 1:30 p.m. in Willingham Auditorium on the University's Macon campus. Dr. Hendricks died Dec. 19 at the age of 81.

The memorial service, which is open to the public, will also be available for viewing via a live stream on the University's website. Following the service, a reception will be held in Newton Chapel.

Dr. Hendricks, affectionately known on campus as “Papa Joe,” was a 1955 graduate of the College of Liberal Arts and a faculty member and administrator for more than 40 years. He was instrumental in bringing Mercer's first black student, Sam Oni, to the University in 1963.
