ATLANTA – Mercer University’s Penfield College recently received the 2018 Outstanding Master’s Counselor Education Program Award from the Southern region of the Association of Counselor Education and Supervision (SACES).

“Ten years ago, our college’s strategic plan set the goal of establishing Mercer’s programs in counseling as pre-eminent in the state, the Southeast and the nation,” said Dr. Priscilla Danheiser, dean of Penfield College. “This award and the constant outstanding scholarly achievements of our students and our faculty members provide strong external validation of our having reached our goal.”

“Recognition goes to our faculty for making our Counseling Department, particularly the master’s degree programs, distinguished enough to receive this award,” added Dr. Karen Rowland, associate professor and chair of the Department of Counseling in Penfield College. “I am most proud of the work that they have done to prepare the next generation of clinical mental health, clinical rehabilitation and professional school counselors for this great state of Georgia. They have given 100 percent, and for that I am very grateful. We are certainly being true to Mercer’s mission to change the world one student at a time.”

SACES is the largest region of the Association for Counselor Education and Supervision, composed of more than 1,500 active members consisting of counselor educators, supervisors, and students from Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Texas, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia.

SACES cultivates an inclusive community of counselor educators and supervisors who develop leaders and counselors committed to professional advocacy and dedicated to client equity and well-being.

The Outstanding Master’s Counselor Education Program Award is given to programs that educate master’s-level counseling students and demonstrate outstanding pre-service and in-service training in core and specialty counseling areas.

“The Southern region of the Association for Counselor Education and Supervision consists of 320 counseling programs across 160 universities throughout the Southeastern United States. There are many reputable and well-known counselor education programs in the Southern region, and to be recognized with this award is truly an honor. It reflects the hard work of the faculty and students in the master’s degree programs at Mercer and demonstrates the excellence for which we strive when training future counselors,” said Dr. Tyler Wilkinson, assistant professor and coordinator of the Clinical Mental Health Counseling Program in Penfield College.

Penfield College offers master’s degrees in clinical mental health counseling, school counseling and clinical rehabilitation counseling, as well as a Ph.D in counselor education and supervision, all on Mercer’s Cecil B. Day Graduate and Professional Campus in Atlanta. For more information, visit penfield.mercer.edu/programs.
