MACON — Mercer University’s student chapter of SWE (Society of Women Engineers) will hold SWEET (Society of Women Engineers: Engineers in Training) One Day Workshops on Saturday, Oct. 17 and Saturday, Oct. 24 from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. at Mercer University’s School of Engineering in Macon.
Mercer engineering students will offer middle and, for the first time, high schoolers the chance to learn about engineering by focusing on hands-on activities that will cultivate young students’ interest in the field.
“Expanding SWEET to high school students will strengthen community STEM outreach, provide career and college guidance and help build a pipeline of future engineers within the local community,” said SWEET’s Director and Faculty Advisor and Assistant Professor of Environmental Engineering Sarah Bauer, Ph.D.
The five-hour workshops, led by SWE members, will expose participants to the wide range of career paths in engineering and allow participants to interact with SWE members, engineering faculty and engineers currently working in the industry.
“SWEET has helped over 200 middle school students discover that engineering can be creative, hands-on and fun while giving them the confidence to explore STEM and imagine themselves pursuing engineering careers,” said Bauer.
The Oct. 17 workshop is for middle school students (grades 6-8), and the Oct. 24 is for high school students (grades 9-12). Workshops both days are from 9 a.m.-2 p.m., with check-in starting at 8:30 a.m. Registration is free, and the deadline is Saturday, Oct. 10.
