ATLANTA — The American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP) has awarded a research grant to Mercer University Southern School of Pharmacy faculty member Christine Y. Hon for her study on histamine pharmacodynamics and genotypes. A resident of DeKalb County, Hon was one of 14 faculty members in the United States selected to receive a grant under the AACP’s New Investigators Program (NIP). Supported by the American Foundation for Pharmaceutical Education, the NIP assists the research careers of new pharmacy faculty by providing start-up funding for their research.

In her study, Hon will study the affects of histamine among healthy volunteers who have different histamine genotypes.

Hon came to the Southern School of Pharmacy in 1999 as an assistant professor of pharmacy practice. Her research interests focus on oncology, drug metabolism and pharmacokinetics.

Prior to joining the Mercer faculty, Hon was a research associate at St. Jude Children’s Hospital in Memphis, Tenn., where she completed three years of post-doctoral research. She graduated from State University of New York in Buffalo, where she earned a bachelor of science degree and a doctor of pharmacy degree.

Founded in 1833, Mercer University is one of the largest Baptist-affiliated institutions in the world and is the only independent university of its size in the nation to offer degree programs in liberal arts, business, engineering, education, medicine, nursing, pharmacy, law and theology. For the past 12 years, U.S. News and World Report has named Mercer University as one of the leading universities in the South.
