SAVANNAH, Ga. — Mercer University’s Eugene W. Stetson School of Business and Economics will bring its graduate business administration program to Savannah this fall. The new program, the Professional Master of Business Administration degree, will be Coastal Georgia’s only executive-format MBA program.
“This new program will build on the strong ties the University already has with this dynamic community,” said Dr. Roger C. Tutterow, dean of the Eugene W. Stetson School of Business and Economics. “Savannah is growing rapidly, and as companies expand and relocate to the area, they must have well-trained, visionary managers and executives. The Professional MBA program is designed to train those leaders.”
The 16-month Professional MBA is aimed at business professionals with at least three years of experience who want to advance their careers to the leadership level in today’s corporate world. Classes will be held on Friday afternoons and all day Saturday every three weeks, allowing even the busiest manager the opportunity to earn this professional degree from an internationally accredited business school. Three retreats provide a concentrated study on specific business topics, including a weeklong Best Practices Field Residency, where students meet with top executives of companies successfully operating in today’s competitive market.
One of the many distinctive features of this cohort MBA program is its emphasis on cross-functional, thematically based courses, which are taught by teams of professors. Unlike the traditional MBA model, which offers separate courses in such areas as accounting, finance, management and marketing, Mercer’s Professional MBA curriculum emphasizes how these areas intersect and function together in order for candidates to gain the broad perspective needed for effective decision-making. Because all candidates will be experienced professionals, the classroom becomes an interactive learning environment with the candidates contributing their experience to the dialogue with the highly credentialed faculty team.
Classes will be led by faculty teams that bring extensive academic and corporate experience to the classroom. MBA candidates will learn through classroom discussions, presentations, team projects, research and technology-based interaction. Throughout the program, candidates will also interact with visiting business leaders. These executives will bring their insights and experience to the classroom as they discuss their companies and how they address the demands of competition in today’s marketplace.
The Professional MBA will be the second program Mercer offers in the Savannah area. Since 1996, Mercer University’s School of Medicine has partnered with Memorial Health University Medical Center to educate future doctors. Half of the third- and fourth-year students in the School of Medicine complete their doctor of medicine studies at the awarding-winning medical center, with many continuing there in their residencies.
