ATLANTA – “The City and the Church” is the theme of the March 19-20 workshop of the McAfee School of Theology at the Mercer University Atlanta campus, 3001 Mercer University Drive. Designed for pastors, church staff and lay leaders interested in or working in urban ministry, the program will feature global urban missiologist Dr. Ray Bakke. The author of five books, including “The Expanded Mission of City Center Churches,” “The Urban Christian” and “A Biblical Word for an Urban World,” Bakke is Distinguished Professor of Global Ministry and academic dean, Bakke Graduate University of Ministry, Seattle, Wash.
Other key speakers will be Dr. Gerald L. Durley, pastor, Providence Missionary Baptist Church, Atlanta, and Dr. Ron Johnson, Arnall Mann Thomasson Professor of Evangelism and Mission, McAfee School of Theology, Atlanta. Sessions will cover “A Journey to the City: The search for a theology as big as the city,” “A Theology of Mission for the City,” “Leading Congregations to Make a Difference in the City,” and “The Other Women in the Family of Jesus.”
Participants will be able to select to attend two of the six practical ministry workshops offered on effective prison ministry, refugee ministry, urban new generation communication, rural/urban partnerships, Latino ministries and the Atlanta Beltline project. The ministry workshops leaders will be the Rev. Tommy Justus, pastor, Mars Hill Baptist Church, Mars Hill, N.C.; Benjamin Barnett, pastor, Faith Fellowship Church, Atlanta; Courtney Hodges, International Rescue Committee, Atlanta; Carra Hughes, Community Outreach, Grant Park Baptist Church, Atlanta; Katye Parker, minister to children, Northwoods Baptist Church, Chamblee, Ga.; Leah Robinson, minister to youth, Spirit of Joy Christian Church, Flowery Branch, Ga.
Funds for the workshop are provided in part by a grant from Faith and the City. Registration is $20 per person and $10 per student if received by March 15 and $30 per person at the door.
