McAfee Names Younger Associate Professor of Preaching

ATLANTA – The McAfee School of Theology of Mercer University announced today the appointment of prominent pastor the Rev. Dr. Brett Younger to the position of associate professor of preaching, effective July 1, 2008.  Younger currently serves as pastor of Broadway Baptist Church in Fort Worth, Texas.

“Dr. Younger has a passion for preaching; a quick sense of humor; extensive pastoral experience in rural, suburban, and urban churches; and a winsome personality,” said Dean R. Alan Culpepper. “We are excited about the contributions he will make both in the classroom and in churches across the Southeast.”

A native of Mississippi, Younger is a graduate of Baylor University, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1983. He received the Master of Divinity degree from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in 1986 and earned the Ph.D. in Christian Preaching from Southern Seminary in 1991.

“I am honored by the invitation to join the McAfee School of Theology and I’m delighted to join such an outstanding faculty,” Younger said. “I feel like the spirit is leading me to this new ministry.

“I’m also sad at leaving Broadway, the church has taught me so much about following Christ, and it is one of my hopes in this new ministry I can teach young people to lead their congregations to be as faithful as Broadway has been.”

Younger has extensive pastoral experience, having been pastor of Mother Neff Baptist Church, in Moody, Texas, associate pastor of Baptist Tabernacle in Louisville, Ky., pastor of Central Baptist Church in Paoli, Ind., pastor of College Heights Baptist Church in Manhattan, Kan., and pastor of Lake Shore Baptist Church in Waco, Texas, before moving to Broadway Baptist Church, where he has served since 2001.

A regular columnist (“The Lighter Side”) for Baptists Today, Younger, is also the author of three books published by Smyth & Helwys:  “Who Moved My Pulpit?  A Hilarious Look at Ministerial Life” (2004), “Spirituality: Finding your Way” (1995), and “Living with Stress: Nurturing Joy in a Tension-Filled World” (co-authored with Carol Younger; 1993).  Younger has also written curriculum for Adult Formations Bible Study and Youth Intersection Bible Study for Smyth & Helwys.  In addition, Younger has been an instructor or visiting professor at Southern Seminary, Midwestern Baptist Seminary, Manhattan Christian College, and McAfee School of Theology.  He is a popular workshop leader, keynote speakers, and worship leader.

Younger is married to the former Carol Davis, who earned the Master of Divinity degree at Southern Seminary and is the Baptist Center Coordinator for the Buckner Children and Family Services at Broadway Baptist Church in Fort Worth. They have two sons: Graham and Caleb.
