ATLANTA/MACON/SAVANNAH - For the sixth straight year, Mercer University has enrolled a record number of students. The University-wide student population is up slightly to 8,341 students this fall. The University enrolled an additional 313 students in non-credit programs, principally international students in its English Language Institute. The University also enrolled the largest-ever incoming undergraduate class on its Macon campus with 766 entering freshmen and transfer students in the fall.
MACON - Mercer University's Townsend School of Music will present A Grand Mercer Christmas, a free concert for the community, on Friday, Nov. 30, and Saturday, Dec. 1, at 7:30 p.m. at The Grand Opera House, a performing arts center of Mercer, located at 651 Mulberry St. in historic downtown Macon. The program, which will be recorded live by Emmy Award-winning Brandenburg Productions for broadcast on Georgia Public Broadcasting and PBS stations across the nation during the 2013 holiday season, will feature two internationallyacclaimed ensembles: the Mercer Singers, conducted by Dr. Stanley Roberts, and the students and faculty of the Robert McDuffie Center for Strings. Acclaimed violinist, Macon native and Center for Strings founder Robert McDuffie will serve as master of ceremonies. The University dedicated the Emily Parker Myers Admissions and Welcome Center on Nov. 2, as it lauded its namesake and her distinguished career at Mercer. Myers retired from Mercer in 2008 as senior vice president of advancement and external affairs after more than 36 years with the University. She worked in the University's admissions office before President R. Kirby Godsey appointed her to head university advancement in 1979, when she became Mercer's first female senior vice president.
The College of Liberal Arts saw four longtime professors retire at the conclusion of the spring semester. The four professors are Joanna Watson from sociology, Dr. Randall Peters from physics and Dr. James Radiker and Dr. John Wright, from psychology.
Dr. Carolyn Yackel of the Mathematics Department has turned her love of textiles and math into beautiful art. Number theory, combinatorics, group theory, calculus, graph theory, probability, topology, fractals, symmetry groups, polyhedra and tessellations can all be present in art, and Yackel is fascinated by their integration and beauty.
Mercer's Debate Society reveled in success last year under second-year coach James K. Stanescu. The team defied state borders and qualified to compete at the national level where they became tournament champions at the Florida State University Debate Invitational in December and semifinalists in the State of Georgia Championship in February.
Students began taking classes in two new majors in the College of Liberal Arts this fall, the law and public policy major in the Political Science Department and the graphic design major in the Art Department.
