ATLANTA -Mercer University Life Trustee Dr. Remer Crum, a dedicated and loyal friend of the University, died Saturday at the age of 96. He, along with his wife Emily, was a longtime supporter of higher education in Georgia. The couple generously gave both their time and financial support to Mercer and LaGrange College, his wife's alma mater. His funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Peachtree Road United Methodist Church in Atlanta.
Mercer turned to one of its own in naming its new sports information director. Robbie Burns, who holds two degrees from Mercer, a bachelor of arts in communications and a master of education, replaced Randy Jones this week in the Mercer Department of Intercollegiate Athletics. Jones resigned to accept a position at Anderson College in South Carolina.Burns brings much experience working with the media to the position. He served for 11 years as the public relations director at the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame from 1996-2007. Among his responsibilities while there were the Sports Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony and the annual Peach State Pigskin Preview. MACON, Ga. - The Atlantic Sun Conference announced the election of its officers for the 2009-10academic year. Mercer President William D. Underwood succeeds Dr. Randy Lowry (Lipscomb) as the conference president and chair of the Presidents Council. UNF President John Delaney will serve asvice chair of the Presidents Council and chair of the Finance Committee.As A-Sun president, Underwood will preside over Presidents Council meetings, ManagementCommittee meetings and the Executive Committee. MACON - For the seventh consecutive year, The Princeton Review has named Mercer University to its list of America's best colleges in the 2010 edition of the book, "Best 371 Colleges." Only about 15 percent of the four-year colleges in America and two Canadian colleges were chosen for the book.
ATLANTA - The Georgia Research Alliance has funded a new collaborative research project, led by Mercer University professor Dr. Martin D'Souza, to explore using nanotechnology to deliver a pneumonia vaccine. Dr. D'Souza, professor in the College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, will collaborate on the $100,000 grant with researchers from Emory University and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Mercer University's College of Continuing and Professional Studies will launch a reformulated undergraduate major in public safety this fall. The program expands upon the College's successful major in criminal justice in order to better serve current and future public safety officials. The new public safety program will launch this fall at four of the College's locations: Atlanta, Macon, Henry County and Douglas County.

Mercer University students played a small but important role in connecting with "at risk" children, many of whom were at a critical juncture in their lives, during their recent three-week Mercer On Mission experience in Brazil. Nine students and two faculty members participated in the program.

Bartling, Pharm.D., associate dean of student affairs and admissions in Mercer University's College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, is the 2009 recipient of the prestigious Bowl of Hygeia, an award presented annually by the Georgia Pharmacy Association.
