ATLANTA - Mercer University's Georgia Baptist College of Nursing announced today that it has named Laura P. Kimble, Ph.D., R.N., currently an associate professor of nursing at Georgia State University, as the College's inaugural Piedmont Healthcare Endowed Chair in Nursing, effective July 1. The appointment follows an extensive national search for an outstanding academic scholar who will have a vital role in advancing the new Ph.D. in nursing, which begins this fall.
MACON - More than 200 Mercer University students will highlight their academic prowess this week at the University Center on Mercer's Macon campus. The students will showcase their talents on Friday, April 17, as part of two events, the Second Annual Engineering Expo and the Third Annual Mercer University Undergraduate Research Symposium. Underwood today announced the appointment of David Shields, Ph.D., CPA, dean of the Haworth College of Business and professor of accounting at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, as dean of Mercer's Eugene W. MACON - A team of 13 Mercer University students took home top honors from the National Model Arab League Conference in Washington, D.C., recently. The team, representing the country of Lebanon, outperformed delegations from 24 other universities in 17 states and one foreign country to claim The Outstanding Delegation Award. Mercer is now considered the reigning national champion for this invitation-only annual event.
MACON - Mercer University graduate student Elizabeth Filippo recently published a feature article in the one of the major technical communication journals, Intercom. Filippo, of Waukesha, Wisc., is working Online through the School of Engineering's Master of Science in Technical Communication and will complete her degree in August.
MACON - In remarkable fashion, a mock trial team at Mercer University's Walter F. George School of Law captured first place in the American Bar Association's National Criminal Justice Trial Advocacy Competition, defeating Harvard and the University of Houston law schools in the semifinals and finals respectively. In addition, third-year Mercer law student Katie Powers was crowned the competition's "Best Advocate" and "Best Cross-Examiner." By winning the overall championship and individual honors, Mercer Law School took home the competition's three most coveted awards.
MACON - QuadWorks, the campus activities board of Mercer University, will host its second annual Bearstock Music and Arts Festival on Saturday, April 18. The all-day concert is free and open to the public and will feature 14 bands on two stages. The music begins at 12 p.m. on Porter Patch at Mercer's historic Macon campus and will feature international recording artists Gym Class Heroes, along with up-and-comers Chester French and 12 other artists. Gym Class Heroes is expected to perform at 9 p.m.
MACON - Mercer University presented 10 pioneers in the anti-human trafficking movement in Georgia with a new award, the Mary Ann Drake Human Rights Advocacy Award, during its March 20 conference against trafficking, titled "Stop Sex Trafficking: The Call To End 21st Century Slavery." The award is named for Dr. Mary Anne Drake, professor and director of Mercer's Interdisciplinary Studies Program. The group surprised Dr. Drake with the honor and presented her with a bouquet of flowers marking the occasion during the awards ceremony.
MACON/ATLANTA/SAVANNAH - Mercer University has set a spring enrollment record, surpassing last year's total by 547 students. Based on official 15th class day numbers, Mercer has enrolled 7,591 students this spring, 7.8 percent more than the comparable period last year. The record comes on the heels of the largest fall enrollment in the university's 176-year history. The most significant gains in spring enrollment were recorded in Mercer's Tift College of Education, which saw an increase of 327 students, or 21.5 percent over last year's figures. The College of Continuing and Professional Studies was up 125 students, or 16.2 percent over last year.
