MACON - Mercer University's College of Liberal Arts will kick off it "Spotlight on China Series" at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 11, with a lecture by China expert and Mercer Economics Professor Penelope Prime, Ph.D., entitled "China's Economic Rise: Context and Implications." Held in Medical School Auditorium, the event, co-sponsored by Mercer's Department of International Programs, is free and open to the public.
MACON - Southern literary scholar Anne Goodwyn Jones will present the 2007 Lamar Memorial Lecture Series of Mercer University, marking the program's 50th anniversary, on Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 15-16, on the university's Macon campus. Jones, visiting fellow at the Center for the Study of Southern Culture at the University of Mississippi, will present three lectures around the theme: "Before and After the War: Formations of Southern Manliness," which are free and open to the public.
MACON - Freshman at Mercer University are fighting hunger in the community by hosting the first Empty Bowls Event in Macon. The First Year Experience class, lead by Mary Ann Drake, Ph.D., is coordinating the efforts of local artists and restaurants to hold a dinner at 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 12 at the Cox Capitol Theatre. Tickets are $15 in advance and will include dinner and a handmade bowl. All proceeds will be donated to local organizations that have a positive impact on hunger fighting efforts in Macon. Empty Bowls is a project started in the 1990s that raises funds for organizations that fight hunger. The premise of this fund-raiser is amazingly simple. Ceramic artists and students donate bowls of all colors, shapes, and sizes. A simple, donated meal of soup, salad, and bread is served in the donated bowls.
